Juan Joseph Mendoza, born on March 19, 1946, in Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, in his beloved hometown. His 80 years of life were woven through with dedication, humor, and unwavering love for his family.

A true man of all trades, Juan took pride in every skill he owned and every task he completed. He navigated life with resilient determination, a spirit shaped in part by his proud service in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. As a Marine, Juan demonstrated outstanding courage and was awarded the Purple Heart, an honor that spoke to his bravery and sacrifice. His military service stands among his proudest accomplishments, and his commitment to his country remains a lasting part of his legacy.

Family meant everything to Juan. He is survived by his loving children, Marylou Barraza, Juan Mendoza, Jr., Veronica Ingram, Erika Acosta, and Gloria Mendoza. He found incomparable joy in the company of his grandchildren: Olivia (Ashley), Ricardo, Mercedes, Gloria Acosta, Mariah (Daniel), Rebecca, Adrian, Enrique, Alex, Jasmine, Imani, Isabella, Candace, and Baby Boy. The legacy of his love continues in his 23 great-grandchildren and one great-granddaughter who carry forward his memory and warmth. He shared a close bond with his cousins Rebecca and Arturo Contreras, and together they grew up considering one another brothers and sisters.

While Juan drew strength from those who remain, he also cherished the memory of family who preceded him in death: his son Gary Mendoza; grandsons Steven Ingram, George Baca, and Brandon Madera; sisters Angela Mendoza and Lydia Herber; brother Salamon Mendoza; his parents, Juan Mendoza and Aurora Mendoza; and beloved aunts Lucia Fisher and Evangelina R. Mendoza.

Those who knew Juan will remember him as a storyteller at heart, one who could captivate any room with tales laced with laughter, a natural jokester whose positivity never waned. Even when set in his ways and particular about how things should be done, he always approached life with a smile and a ready wit. His fierce love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was evident in every moment he spent with them.

Juan also found simple pleasures in life’s quiet moments, especially relaxing with a cigarette as he reflected or enjoyed the presence of loved ones nearby. To his family and friends, he was both a source of strength and lightness, a remarkable combination that made him unforgettable. He played many instruments including the guitar and accordion.

A visitation in celebration and remembrance of Juan’s life will be held on August 11, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Martinez Funeral Chapels – Tucson, located at 2580 S 6th Ave, Tucson, AZ 85713. A prayer service will also take place there at 2:00 PM.

Though Juan Joseph Mendoza’s earthly journey has come to an end, the legacy he leaves in the hearts of his family and all who knew him will endure. His life, defined by courage, humor, and enduring love, will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have been part of his story.
