John "Sonny" L. Santa Marina, beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on May 10, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 74. Born on December 31, 1950, in Tucson, Sonny spent his life in the city he loved, attending Tucson High School and establishing a lasting presence in the community.
Throughout his career, Sonny shone as a cook for many years and worked diligently in maintenance. He took pride in managing the trailer park where he resided, a testament to his hardworking spirit and dedication to his role. Sonny was known for his confident and cheerful personality, always carrying a sense of humor that brightened the lives of those around him, even when his jokes missed the mark. He was straightforward in his dealings, lending a helping hand to those in need and always showcasing a deep affection for the animals in his life.
Sonny's hobbies included enjoying trips to the casino and listening to music, and he was known for sporting many tattoos that told his personal stories. His proudest accomplishments included his children and his cherished truck, symbols of the life he built through perseverance and love.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his children: Georgina Martinez (Arnold), Sandra Ortiz, and John Santa Marina. He adored his grandchildren: Arnold, Isaac, Nicholas, Rudy, Ariana, Issaiah, John, Noah, and Eli, and was a proud great-grandfather to Millie and Emery. Sonny is also survived by his siblings: George Aros, Bernie Santa Marina, Susie Santa Marina, and Don Posey, as well as the mother of his children, Irene Santa Marina, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews whose lives he touched.
Sonny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria Santa Marina, daughter, Liza Santa Marina, and his siblings Thomas Aros, Lupita Ramos, and his son-in-law, Rudy Ortiz. He was also preceded by his parents, Juan and Aurora Santa Marina.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on May 19, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a Rosary from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, which will be held at Martinez Funeral Chapels in Tucson, Arizona.
Sonny’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of many. He will be remembered for his generosity, humor, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. His legacy of kindness and joy will continue to resonate in the lives he touched.
