John Edward Gruenemeier

September 3, 1948 — April 18, 2023

John Edward Gruenemeier, son of Edward J. Gruenemeier and Anna Marie Gruenemeier (Valentiner), passed peacefully from this life the morning of April 18th, 2023 at home in Rio Rico, AZ.  He was married to and survived by his wife, Angela Rose Gruenemeier (Brausch) of 47 years and also by daughters, Alecia Marie Gruenemeier and Christine Marie Castellano, son-in-law Phillip Castellano, granddaughter Corrine Grace Castellano, sister Phyllis Ann Jones and cousins Kathe Burklow, Ann Marie Dorn (spouse Richard Dorn) and James Staudacher (spouse Faith Coburn).

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, John graduated from Moeller High School and also received a degree from Ohio State College of Business. He was a former Senior VP and Partner of Valuation Research Corporation, a company for which he worked for 40 + years and during which he traveled widely in the US as well as abroad.

John moved with his wife, Angie, to Rio Rico, AZ in 2005 and soon became actively involved in the community, including becoming a Rio Rico Rotarian in 2008. He served as President of the Rio Rico Rotary three times as well as Chair of the Rio Rico Rotary Foundation.  John also served a term on the Tubac Fire Board.

You could often see John on a Saturday morning outside of Nickel’s Diner selling the Rio Rico Rotary Foundation’s 50/50 Raffle Tickets to help support local causes.  One could also find him in the diner on most week days meeting with friends and “taking care of business”.

John received a number of recognitions during his service to the community including three times Rio Rico Rotarian of the Year, the Four Avenues of Service Citation and numerous Paul Harris Awards including Major Donor.

More important than awards, however, John is and was known as friendly, loyal, trustworthy, responsible and caring….a man of character and integrity and a confidant to many.

One of his greatest joys in the last years of his life was his two year old granddaughter who called him “PopPop”.

A “Gentle Giant”, easy to hug and to give hugs, John’s presence will continue to have a positive and significant impact on his family, friends and community for years to come.

John, you are greatly loved and missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted toward the creation of the John E. Gruenemeier Scholarship Fund.  Donations can be made payable to the   Rio Rico Rotary Foundation, PO Box 4925, Rio Rico, AZ 85648.  Please put JEG Scholarship in the Memo. Thank you!
