Cecilia N. Munoz

Cecilia N. Munoz, a cherished mother and grandmother, peacefully passed away on April 4, 2026, in her hometown of Nogales, Arizona. Born on August 7, 1935, Cecilia’s life reflected ninety years of devotion to her family, faith, and community. She leaves behind a legacy defined by love, generosity, and unwavering selflessness.

A proud native of Nogales, Cecilia exhibited remarkable intelligence and dedication from a young age, graduating from Nogales High School in 1953 at just 17 years old, having completed her studies in an impressive three years. During her school days, she was an avid basketball player and nurtured a lifelong passion for sports, especially rooting for Arizona teams such as the University of Arizona Wildcats, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Suns. Cecilia also held a special admiration for coach Lute Olsen, demonstrating her deep connection to the sport. In addition to sports, she enjoyed following local news and global events, as well as watching her favorite television programs, including crime shows and game shows like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Cecilia devoted over 18 years of her professional life as an operator for the Mountain Bell Telephone Company in Nogales, exemplifying a strong work ethic and commitment. Her talents extended beyond her career; she was renowned for her exceptional cooking skills, particularly her distinctive approach to recipes without utilizing true measurements, with her mac and cheese being a beloved dish among family and friends.

Known for her warmth, kindness, and generosity, Cecilia touched the lives of many in her community. She was a trusted confidante, a source of comfort and wisdom, and many sought her guidance. Her extensive knowledge of herbal supplements and healing massages brought relief to those in need. Cecilia’s delightful personality included a sweet fondness for Reisen Chocolate and Tic Tacs, balanced with a sharp wit and a lively sense of humor.

A devout Catholic, Cecilia drew strength and peace from her faith, which inspired her compassionate nature and eagerness to help others. She often evoked the importance of Catholic faith and turning to God in times of need for strength and guidance. One of her greatest joys was supporting her children and grandchildren. She took immense pride in their accomplishments and treasured her role as a mother and grandmother in all their academic and athletic endeavors.

In addition to nurturing her own family, Cecilia provided devoted care to her late husband during difficult times and selflessly supported her sister Grace, Grace’s husband Robert, and their family after Grace’s passing, ensuring their home was cared for and nurtured.

Cecilia is lovingly survived by her children, Maria Elena “Nena” Barton and her husband Sean, and Alejandro “Alex” Munoz; her grandchildren, Ian R. Barton, Connor A. Barton, and Kayla S. Barton; along with a wide circle of extended family and friends who will deeply miss her presence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Maria (JM) “Pachili” Munoz, and her siblings, Gilbert Noriega and Grace Ramirez.

A Rosary will be held on April 17, 2026, at 1:30 PM, followed by a Mass at 2:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 272 North Rodriguez Street, Nogales, AZ 85621. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Cecilia are warmly invited to honor and celebrate this remarkable woman.

Cecilia N. Munoz’s life stands as a testament to the power of love, faith, and selflessness. Her legacy of kindness and devotion will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed, yet her spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to share in her life.
